Today we will continue our work with "The Censors" by looking at the satirical elements of the short story. We will first build our understanding of the characteristics of effective satires by listening to a podcast and taking a look at some real audience reaction. The purpose of this task is to develop a shared understanding of what makes a satire effective and to apply what we learn about the characteristics of effective satires to "The Censors."
First, listen to the podcast "To ensure every child 'wins', Ontario athletic association removes ball from soccer” by CBC Broadcasting. This podcast is satire and you're listening to the podcast just to notice what you hear. What's being discussed? Who's doing the talking?
Once you've listened to the podcast, take a look at the reactions real listeners posted to CBC's website. It's clear that the podcast had an effect. After listening to the podcast and reviewing the listener comments, please compose a quick write in response to the following:
What does it mean for a satire to be effective?
What did the producers of this podcast do to make this an effective satire?
Work with your partner to share your quick write.
Read your response to the question: What does it mean for a satire to be effective? and listen to your partner read their response.
Work with your partner to come to a shared understanding of what it means for a satire to be effective and add your thinking to your chart in Google Slide.
Next, read your response to the question: What did the producers of this podcast do to make this an effective satire? and listen to your partner read their response.
Working from your responses, work with our partner to come up with a shared list of characteristics of an effective satire. Add your thinking to the Google Slide.
You and your partner will be expected to share your chart during our whole group Zoom and we will work as a class to create a shared chart.
Please take 3-5 minutes to compose a quick write in response to the following question. Use our chart on effective satire to help you as you write:
What makes "The Censors" an effective (or not an effective) satire?
Once you have completed your quick write, please post it to the Padlet.
Please select two posts on padlet and leave feedback. This should be posts that have not received feedback yet. If all posts have feedback, then you may select a post with feedback. Use the following questions to guide your feedback:
What do you understand about your classmate's idea from this quick write?
What is unclear?
Where does your classmate need to show more evidence?
