Our Mission
It is the mission of the NYLT Leadership Academy to provide each council with the opportunity to participate in an effective, world class youth leadership training program. The Leadership Academy’s goal is to develop a staff dedicated to infecting each participant with an enthusiastic force of learning that will instill in them a growth experience that will last a lifetime. This goal will be accomplished through the establishment of a special place where learning and mutual respect are fostered within the ideals of the Scout Oath and Law.

YOUTH: The focus of this program is on inspiring and enabling participants to deliver effective, world class National Youth Leadership Training courses in their local councils with special emphasis on improving presentation skills, evaluation skills, and on learning in more depth the NYLT leadership skills.
While attending the NYLT Leadership Academy, you will be engaged in a full program with a wide variety of activities including:
Understanding, using, and evaluating your use of the NYLT Leadership Tools
Making presentations on Leadership topics (you will make 5 presentations)
Living and learning about the concepts of Leading Yourself, and Servant Leadership
Learning how to prepare for and effectively evaluate a presentation
Remarkable evening Guest Speakers sharing their life leadership lessons
Quest for the meaning of Teaching Leadership
Participating in effective model NYLT activities such as realistic first aid, geocaching, instructional campfires, instructional inter-faith worship services.
Exceptional hike experience at your respective course location.
Participant Qualifications
This course is for Scouts BSA, Sea Scouts and Venturers who meet the following qualifications:
Have completed your council’s National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT). If your council does not have an NYLT program, you may still qualify by working with a council representative to become familiar with the NYLT Staff Guide and Syllabus.
First Class rank or above; or a Venturer.
All participants must be 13 years old and have completed 8th grade by the opening day of course, but not yet 18; or if a Venturer not yet 21.
Willingness to take back to your newly acquired knowledge and skills at the NYLT Leadership Academy back to your council, troop and community.
Scholarships are available to those who qualify.

Our Youth Program:
The NYLT Leadership Academy teaches your child how to be an outstanding presenter, evaluator, and model leader not only in Scouting, but beyond. Our program uses leadership models from the National Youth Leadership Training program and focuses on creating a more in-depth understanding of key leadership concepts.
Your Child will become:

Your Child will be engaged in:
Understanding, using, and evaluating their use of the NYLT Leadership Tools
Learning techniques used to prepare for and evaluate presentations while making and delivering five (informative and entertaining) presentations on various leadership concepts
Living and learning about the concepts of Leading Yourself and Servant Leadership
Listening to remarkable evening Guest Speakers sharing their life leadership lessons
Participating in effective model NYLT activities, such as: realistic first aid, geocaching, instructional campfires, and instructional inter-faith worship services.
Our partnership with
The NYLT Leadership Academy has long been a program for premier leaders in the Boy Scouts of America, and has focused on the fundamental skills of instruction and evaluation as a way to build strong leaders and teachers. Through our partnership with West Virginia University the NYLT Leadership Academy deepens its roots in delivering an academically rigorously leadership development program for youth across the United States.
