Logica Universalis Association is an NGO based in Geneva, Switzerland, aiming to promote logic in all its aspects (philosophical, mathematical, computational, linguistic, semiotic, historical) and the interaction between all interested in logic in a way or another. We believe that to do so, it is important to have, on the one hand, local logical societies and, on the other hand, to have interactions with societies in other fields, in particular, international organizations.
LUA has developed many concrete activities:
a series of world congresses: UNILOG (started in 2005)
a journal: Logica Universalis (created in 2007)
a book series: Studies in Universal Logic (created in 2007)
a second book series: Logic PhDs (created in 2017)
an underway Encyclopaedia of Logic (started in 2014)
the Logic Prizes (started in 2015)
the World Logic Prizes Contest (created in 2018)
the World Logic Day (created in 2019)
the Logica Universalis Webinar (started in 2020)
The Research Group Semiotics of Logic and Reasoning was established by researchers from America and Europe working on topics related to the interdisciplinary study of all types of reasoning: mathematical proving, inference or argumentation instances, diagrammatic reasoning, computer-assisted proving, etc. and their applications in physical systems, deductive systems, communications networks, the hermeneutics of the history of mathematics, mathematics education, and other areas. These issues are approached from a broader semiotic perspective involving Peirce’s semiotics, Goguen’s algebraic semiotics and a category-theoretical perspective.
Among the research topics that the Group focuses on are:
Semiotics of the dialogical nature of proving discourse.
Proving and developing of knowledge systems.
The study of proving from the perspective of the Peircean theory of signs, especially his idea of operational iconicity.
The study of abductive inferences in diagrammatic reasoning.
The transfer of the German hermeneutic and "Russian formalism" methodologies to questions of understanding proof narratives.
The application of communication models to describe stylistic features of mathematical proof narratives.
Styles of reasoning in mathematics vs. styles in art.
Agency, Being, Events and Truth.
The Group aims to connect various research centres, scholars, and academic institutions around the globe involved in similar or related research to engage in collaborative projects in these areas at local, regional, and global levels. The Group participates in the activities of the Logica Universalis Association and other interdisciplinary societies.
The Traditional Music Association of Apokoronas "CHARILAOS" was founded in 2012 by musicians born or originated in the Apokoronas province. The purpose of its establishment is, among other things, the study, preservation and dissemination of the musical legacy of Apokoronas and to make known the life and work of the outstanding musicians who have contributed to our huge musical heritage. The Association supports research on the roots of Cretan traditional music and has published several contributions on the history of Cretan music and discography. It also runs a project to create a database of historical photos and sound archives of past musicians.
The Association was named "Charilaos" in honour of the legendary lyre player Charilaos Piperakis (1893-1978), born in Xirosterni of Apokoronas, a pioneer of Cretan music. Soon after finishing high school, at the age of 17, Charilaos left Crete for California, America. The immigration wave before and after World War I brought many Cretans to this country. Charilaos started travelling across all the States to offer the Cretans relief from the loneliness in the foreign lands and rest from their exhaustive work at the mines. He was integrated into the broader social networks of the peoples of the Ottoman Empire, which included Greeks from free Greece, Asia Minor, Armenians, Jews, Muslim Cretans, Arabs, as well as other Balkans, such as Romanians and Bulgarians. The gathering and entertainment places during the 1910s, 1920s and 1930s were mainly the so-called "Café Aman" with oriental music incorporating Arabic and Ottoman elements, Greek with Cretan, Asia Minor, and Jewish or Roma music. Charilaos becomes eclectic in his listening and constantly expands his repertoire.
The venue will be the premises of the Orthodox Academy of Crete, Kolymbari, Crete.
The Orthodox Academy of Crete is a non-profit Foundation and Research Centre that aims at promoting the dialogue between faith, science and culture, inspired by the Platonic tradition of συμφιλοσοφεῖν (symphilosophein - philosophising together) and the support of human rights and dignity. In recognition of its great contribution to the international saliency of Orthodoxy, Peace, Dialogue and Cooperation of Religions and society in general. The Orthodox Academy of Crete has been awarded the Silver Medal of the Academy of Athens on December 21st, 2017.
