Human Performance Improvement

Organizational leaders are always looking for ways to help their employees perform their jobs more effectively and efficiently. However, most people resist change and this can create significant challenges for organizations.

Human Performance Improvement (HPI) is a fifty year old discipline that follows five broad steps to help employees perform their jobs in more effective ways. These five general steps are:

  1. Conduct a needs analysis or assessment to determine where the "gap" is between the desired employee performance and the actual performance.

  2. Conduct an additional analysis to identify the root cause of the performance gap

  3. Identify and select the most effective solutions to close that performance gap.

  4. Implement the solutions and managing the process of making the needed changes along the way.

  5. And finally to evaluate the results of the implementation efforts to determine if the original performance problems and challenge have been resolved.

During the course of my two year Masters Degree program from Boise State University I had opportunity to practice using each of the steps and stages of the Human Performance Improvement Model. I have selected two case study projects as samples of the work I completed. The first project focuses on the Needs Assessment process and the other project focuses on the process of Evaluation results. Below is a simple overview of the information presented in each of these case studies. Click on the link to be taken the actual case studies.
