Modalities/Types of Massage

A massage modality is a system of techniques or a particular approach to massage to achieve  certain outcomes. A modality is usually developed in a certain region or sometimes by a particular person. Some modalities are comprehensive, meaning that they are intended to serve as the sole framework for the massage session. Other modalities are techniques that are intended to be used in conjunction with other types of massage or during a general Swedish style massage. Below are a  list of massage modalities/techniques that I have had some experience with. Some I have used extensively and others I have only had limited, informal experience. Unless you have had experience with one of the below modalities, please research them (youtube, google, even an image search might be helpful) before asking for me to incorporate them into your session.

Swedish: this is the type of massage most western clients are familiar with.

Deep tissue: not necessarily a modality, just the depth of tissue the massage techniques are aimed to address

Reflexology/acupressure

Craniosacral

Myofascial Therapy

Trigger Point Therapy

Cupping

Hot stones (I don't do whole body hot stone massages, I only use them briefly on the upper back and neck)

Muscle scraping

Manual lymphatic drainage

Stretching/Traction/Pin and stretch

Aromatherapy (not really a modality, just using essential oils to help bring about a conducive state of mind)
