During the 2025-26 school year, I will be working with my colleagues to develop a new ecology unit for Biology A, the introductory biology class at Royal Oak High School. The unit will include well-being and sustainability elements from this project.
At this point, the unit is a work in progress. As it develops, it will be based on the curriculum standards shown below.
HS-LS1-2 Develop and use a model to illustrate the hierarchical organization of interacting systems that provide specific functions within multicellular organisms.
HS-ESS3-1 Construct an explanation based on evidence for how the availability of natural resources, occurrence of natural hazards, and changes in climate have influenced human activity.
Global Context: Globalization and Sustainability
Key Concepts: Change, Systems
Approaches to Learning Skills:
Emotional management - Practice being aware of body-mind connections
Critical thinking - Use models and simulations to explore complex systems and issues
Creativity and innovation: Practice flexible thinking – arguing both sides of an argument
