Travel information
Workshop Location
The location will be in Telluride, Colorado, at the Telluride Middle-High School, at the entrance to the town. See About workshop.
Housing
Housing assignments will be sent to workshop participants before they arrive. Participants will be housed in shared condominiums with shared bedrooms. A map of these condos is below (the marking of Lulu city can be ignored).
Important note: Participants with workshop housing are NOT required to leave their credit card information with the rental company. There are often employees that have not been correctly informed of this.
The workshop organizers are using Accommodations in Telluride and Alpine Lodging in Telluride. The organizers have had multiple bad experiences with Avant Stay. Participants who arrange their own housing are advised to check independent reviews and the Better Business Bureau records of complaints.
Getting to Telluride
See here for official Telluride visitors guide on getting to Telluride.
We recommend buying air tickets as early as possible because summer 2024 is projected to be a popular travel season.
The most popular ways to get to Telluride are
1. Fly to one of the regional airports such as Montrose Regional Airport (MTJ) or (second choice) Cortez Airport (CEZ). The Telluride Airport (KTEX) is also an option, with commercial flights (or maybe only one) from Denver.
Bear in mind that flights around Telluride are often subject to weather restrictions, e.g. hot dry day can result in weight limits, or thunderstorms can prevent landing or takeoff.
From Montrose (due north of Telluride), take a shuttle (about a 90 minute ride) to Telluride. You will need to make a reservation for the shuttle. Select 'shared ride.' Contact: Let's Ride letsride.co or Mountain Limos www.mountainlimos.com +1-888-546-6894. Rates from Montrose or Cortez to Telluride are about $60-80 one-way for a shared ride.
From Telluride Airport, there is at least one shuttle to town, about a 15 minute ride.
Ask the shuttle driver to take you directly to your condominium. You will have received a digital key for check-in beforehand.
Important note: For any long distance (e.g. Montrose) shuttle reservation, check the fine print. You may be responsible for the full cost of the shuttle if you are the only passenger. We strongly suggest sharing the ride. Check the workshop ride board which is available on the workshop slack workspace (if you are a registered participant or invitee, you should have recieved information about how to join the slack workspace).
2. Fly to Denver or Albuquerque and drive to Telluride. These trips take from 6 to 9 hours depending on your route and stops for sightseeing, etc. A 2-day Hertz car rental with pickup at Denver and drop off at Telluride airport cost about $600 in 2022 (plus you will need to pay for, or beg a ride, or borrow a bike that you bring along, to get back to town).
3. Alternately, you can fly to Durango Airport (DRO) or Grand Junction Airport (GJT) and from there take a shuttle (about a 2.5 hour ride) to Telluride. Again, you will need to make a reservation with letsride.co. Check shuttle prices from these two airports; they can be expensive!
Special packing hints
Hat, sunglasses sunscreen (intense UV), umbrella (afternoon thunderstorms).
Allergy medicine? Sometimes very dry with frequent wildfires and lots of pollen. Telluride has a pharmacy but it is expensive.
Hiking shoes? Tennis racket? plus non-marking shoes for court.
Backpacking stuff (kits available for rent too).
Mountain biking gloves if you want to ride (shops have helmets included).
Rock climbing gear? Fly fishing gear?
Luggage delivery
In case your luggage follows you (which can happen on hot days when the plane is overloaded), it may be helpful to write your housing condo, e.g. Telluride Lodge 312, on your luggage tag. Then the shuttle drivers who deliver leftover luggage will know exactly where to drop off your bags.
