Ready-to-Use, Targeted RLA Skill Assessments

TEKSbank Focus Assessments are ready-to-use RLA assessments built around one specific reading or writing skill. Rather than measuring many skills at once, each assessment provides multiple opportunities for students to demonstrate their understanding of a single area of focus.

Purpose and Design

Focus Assessments can help educators:

• Focus on one targeted reading or writing skill rather than measuring many skills within a broad assessment.

• Provide a curated set of TEKS-aligned assessment items selected for the purpose of the assessment.

• Identify patterns in student strengths and misconceptions.

• Gather more specific evidence than a broad, multi-skill assessment may provide.

• Provide a ready-to-use option while allowing educators to spend more time analyzing results and planning next steps.

Examples of Focus Skills

Focus Assessments may target skills such as making inferences, author’s purpose, text structure, central idea, revising, editing, organization, sentence structure, or conventions.

Developed and Reviewed by TEKSbank

Focus Assessments are developed through the TEKSbank assessment development process, with input from Texas educators and subject-matter experts. Standards, assessment content, and items are reviewed to support alignment, quality, and instructional relevance.

Using Focus Assessments in TEKSbank Classroom

Focus Assessments are available through the Shared Library in TEKSbank Classroom, allowing educators to quickly locate and use prebuilt assessments with their students.
