Plasma CNC
A “CNC plasma” system is a machine that carries a plasma torch, and can move that torch in a path directed by a computer. The term “CNC” refers to “Computer Numerical Control”, which means that a computer is used to direct the machines motion based on numerical codes in a program.
Metal Cutting Project
Design in AutoCAD
Original Drawing
Red lines are the cliffside and moon. White lines are the trees. green line is the border marking an 11in x 11in space.
Cutting Drawing
Line colors are the same for the original drawing. Now the drawing is set up so there is enough space for the laser pathway.
FireControl
Tool pathway in FireControl. Orange lines are cutting lines, blue lines are paths the tool takes without cutting.
Me working with FireControl to transfer the tool paths to the CNC machine.
The Cut
- WARNING VERY LOUD AND BRIGHT -
Video of the plasma cutter following the tool path.
The piece after the machine finishes the cut. It has been washed and the big cutouts of metal have been removed. Smaller cutouts that weren't removed were not entirely cut.
Post Processing
I took an angle grinder to one side after chipping away buildup on the edges.
Final Image
I didn't quite like the job I did angle grinding in some spots so tried again on the other side. I was unable to get small pieces of metal out in spots like the moon but I still liked how it turned out overall.
