Beating the bounds is an ancient custom still observed in parts of England, Wales, and the New England region of the United States, which traditionally involved swatting local landmarks with branches to maintain a shared mental map of parish boundaries. My recent limitation on vigorous activity has led me to go on enjoyable walks around our village. I often wish some of my neighbours could join me in the short perambulations to soak in the improving weather.
Starting from our central reception the route I have been following is in the map below and it put me in mind of the ancient custom of Beating the bounds. This route was recorded with my little GPS bike computer and shared on Strava on a public page.
I propose an experimental activity of this name to start at 3.15 pm on Sunday 21 August 2022 at the central reception. Those gathered at that time will undertake the approximate 1.5 km walk together and retire to the Bar Lounge at the end. We will enjoy tea and coffee over a Tech Consult session until around 5 pm or until the last person leaves.
If this proves popular, we might repeat this on future Sunday afternoons on the dates of our choice.
Not all are able to walk at normal pace. For those who walk more slowly with sticks or wheelers, a level route can be taken while the more able walkers beat the boundary. A suggested route is:
