Meeting 28 was the Christmas Edition and the last meeting of 2022. Note Helga with her new eyes.
We started with an important discussion about an email survey request that purported to come from Tricare soliciting feedback on living at Cypress Gardens to aid future planning. Elements of the message which came from a company called MOA pointed to it being a scam, which was the consensus decision. Subsequently Leanne informed us the message was genuine. Michael approached Tricare about the suspicious nature of the message and received a quick response from Kathlyn the marketing manager. The text appears on the ToC WhatsApp group.
Several other topics were discussed as listed on the Notion notes page.
The meeting ended early for us to enjoy some Christmas cake.
The Meeting 27 crowd was for the stalwarts.
We discussed briefly the new Communities feature of WhatsApp and the creation of our Cypress Gardens RCR Community to which all the existing activities groups were added. Leonie was able to add here H2O Aerobics group to the community. It may take some time to become accustomed to the new feature and how useful it will be.
Michael covered the main points of his newsletter article about Tech and Travel in light of his trip to Tas. This sparked a fair bit of interaction and raised some topics to be covered in more detail in future ToC meetings.
Michael spoke about a Chromebook available on Amazon at half price in the Black Friday sales. However, it turned out Tony had purchased the same machine, Lenovo Slim 3, at an even better price from JB Hi-Fi. He is easing into using it and we await with interest how he progresses.
Sadly Michael's laptop battery ran out of juice and the meeting became a very informative general discussion.
The Meeting 26 crowd was small but of high quality.
As the photo competition did not achieve traction it was decided to simply gather all submitted photos together in an archive page. This was Bill's original idea and we will proceed on these lines. The competitive element is removed, and all residents are encouraged to submit photos on a regular basis. This will be announced in the next newsletter.
Michael gave an update on the WhatsApp groups in operation, and it is pleasing to see their use gradually increasing. We hoped members of ToC will continue to encourage other residents to join in.
This is the Meeting 25 crowd with a couple missing who had to leave early.
Michael mentioned the new WhatsApp group called Travel Photos which anyone can ask to join. The intention is to allow residents to submit their travel photos either while actually travelling or on their return. This will become an archive of interesting travel photos of all the residents who care to participate. Just contact Michael and you will be added to the group.
Previously known as Beating the Bounds the Sunday afternoon stroll around our village grounds has been renamed the Boundary Ramble. An explanatory poster appears on the noticeboard. After the Boundary Ramble on Sunday 6 November a new WhatsApp group was created to allow those interested to be kept informed of the strolls and to show photos of participation and to show the route. The inaugural Boundary Ramble appears on Strava. Just contact Michael to join the new group.
Michael then posed a tech problem and asked the audience for a solution. If you have printed sheets of documents like stories, letters, notices, and the like, how can you extract the text from these pages so you may edit it in apps like Microsoft Word? Eventually we talked about Microsoft Lens, an app we have covered a few times, to allow our phones to capture a good photo of the pages in question. We then inserted these photos in Microsoft OneNote (notes apps from Apple and Google and others also work here) on our laptops. In the OneNote page right clicking on the image of the page allows us to choose Copy text from image which places all the text on the clipboard. From there we can copy and paste it into to other apps like Word, email, WhatsApp, OneNote, and so on, in fact any app that handles text.
Tony brought along an article from The Australian on Monday 31 October about Mark Zuckerberg's ideas for the metaverse. We had a good discussion of what that means and whether it would ever be relevant for the assembled group.
