We had 11 in the group for meeting 10 with low temperatures.
We reviewed the scanning of QR codes mentioned in the meeting from the previous week. There is a new page covering this material, see the QR Codes page. This gives a little more detail on how to generate the QR code for any web page you view in a browser on your laptop or desktop.
The main topic for the meeting was electronic books which also includes electronic magazines and audio books. we looked at the pros and cons compared to printed books.
Some in the audience though still love their printed books and would add missing the smell and feel of print to the downside column. We went on to discuss and try out the Libby app available to borrow and read/play ebooks, emagazines and audio books from our local Gold Coast Libraries with a valid library card. Each digital asset can be borrowed for 14 days before expiry which can be renewed provided no other readers have it on hold. You can place a hold on any of the digital assets in the library although the wait period varies a lot - my hold for the smash hit Where the Crawdads Sing ebook took 18 months to arrive! Several attendees admitted they would need to reregister their out of date library cards having not been able to go to a library in the recent past. Now there is an incentive to be a member of the local library and enjoy electronic assets from your own living room in Cypress Gardens.
The Libby home page for our library shows there are currently 94 thousand books/magazines to be borrowed in 159 different subjects.
A copy of the slides is available.
