A living specimen here. I just managed to finish my 1-year master's program of knowledge science back in Malaysia. a touch about my background, I didn't come from a computing nor maths background. So here are the several takes that supported my perspectives.
Motivation & - With an abundance of online resources at the fraction of the worth, I want to think that I can learn on my very own at my very own pace, which I used to be wrong. it's so hard to plan for something if there's no direct reward or consequences. Taking physical class allows me to possess clear goals like keeping an honest CGPA, completing my assignment before the deadline, concentrate on my lectures, etc, etc.
Commitment- you'll put more commitment and focus after realizing you already paid a hefty price for taking the master program.
Community - As someone coming from a special background ( mechanical engineering), most of my original cliques aren't aware of or understand this field. Which the matter that I faced whenever I would like to possess someone to debate or ask regarding data science. By joining this master's program, I can a minimum of mix and mingle with my classmates which will have an equivalent mentality.
Networking - several scholars are working for the industry. I managed to urge two different phone interview through my classmate’s referral (yet, I didn't manage to land any)
Certificate - regardless of how good you're in self-learning, an enormous portion of the employers still prefer someone that has the conventional educational background, this is often supported by the interview’s feedback that I got. And most employers are still skeptical regarding the certificates from the web courses.

Cost - the value can become so expensive comparing to the MOOC.
Time - you'll get to sacrifice much time to focus on doing this master with none guarantee of the work security within the data science field.
Syllabus - a number of the syllabus taught within the class were outdated and not even relevant, and yes, I agree that some online courses did provide much better content by the planet renown university professors.
So is it worth it? I assume it depends upon the circumstances. I feel if my master takes longer than 1 year or above a certain price threshold, I will be able to not pursue it. By the way, I just landed employment at a data intelligent company.
I guess for my case, it's worthwhile. :)
