The smallest of the four biomes, the desert uses extensive rockwork as well as some clever bits of forced perspective to create the illusion that guests are in a vast, dry, arid region. Florida's humidity makes it impossible for the illusion to fully land of course. At first glance there might not seem to be much here beyond rockwork and patches of sand (just out of guests reach for practicality purposes of course). Look closer though and you'll find rich ecosystem hidden in the harsh environment.
There is a large 3D model showing off the food web of the North American desert ecosystem and explaining how cacti and all the other flora/fauna have adapted to the nearly unlivable environment. Even here the circle of life lives on. There is another display that is more interactive with a scale model of a sandy desert inside a glass case. Guests can angle and maneuver fans to show how the arid landscape is shaped and changed by the winds. Be on the look out because buried in these sands are Easter Eggs and references to the Cave of Wonders and the Elephant Graveyard. Ya never know what you might find buried beneath the sands of time!
