Consistent with its Mission, that of providing competency training for community service, the Department of Biology of the College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Manila, is conducting a "Training Program for High School Biology Teachers" in District V of Manila.
Consistent with its Mission, that of providing competency training for community service, the Department of Biology of the College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Manila, is conducting a "Training Program for High School Biology Teachers" in District V of Manila.
The main objective of the training program is to improve the teachers' pedagogical content knowledge (PCK) of Biology topics being taught in Grades 7 to 10.

Since a one-day seminar would not suffice to cover pertinent topics on innovative teaching-learning strategies and specific Biology content, the program organizers have decided to employ "blended learning" such that lectures will be delivered online, while hands-on activities, demonstrations and return demonstrations will be performed during face-to-face sessions. Face-to-face sessions have been scheduled sometime in November this year. The exact date and venue will be announced in this website.

To better ensure that the training program will be relevant and useful for high school teachers, the learning needs of the prospective participants were assessed first. Last March this year, Science teachers from a nearby high school answered a "needs assessment survey". Participants were asked to indicate which of the Biology topics in the K-12 curriculum, do they find difficult to understand and to teach. Once they have identified the topics they find difficulty to understand and to teach, they were asked to rank the topics based on urgency - that is, which of the topics do they want to learn first, or are required of them to learn soon.

Hence, the first set of Biology topics that will be covered in this online module will be that of genetics, and principles of heredity and variation.

The next topics to be included in this module will be those of Ecology, and Organ Systems (Anatomy and Physiology).

It is believed that effective teaching will ultimately result to successful learning among students. It is hoped that by conducting this Teacher Training Program, high school Biology Teachers will be more empowered as they form the next breed of students who will pursue careers in Biology, medicine, and other related fields.
