Meiosis

In the video lesson entitled Overview of Heredity Topics, you have learned that Meiosis plays a significant role in gamete formation, as well as in producing variation among offsprings, partly due to the exchange of genetic material between homologous chromosomes, in the event called crossing over.

In this video discussion on Meiosis, we will look more closely into the chromosomal events that take place in each stage of Meiosis. A big chunk of the discussion is devoted to the chromosomal events that take place during Prophase I.

It is also expected that after watching this video, you should be able to explain the significance of Meiosis in producing variation, and in maintaining the chromosomal number of an organism.
