Here are some frequently asked questions! If you have other specific queries, reach out to thssociety@gmail.com.
Is teachHOUSTON the same as the teachHOUSTON Student Society?
Not exactly! teachHOUSTON is the university’s teacher preparation program that certifies STEM majors to teach in grades 7–12. The teachHOUSTON Student Society (THSS) is a student-run organization created to support that program. We host professional development, community service, mentorship, and social events to help future teachers grow and connect.
What does the Student Society do?
We bring the teachHOUSTON community together through:
Professional Development – workshops, panels, and certification prep
Community Service – volunteer opportunities and outreach projects
Social Events – fun gatherings to build connections
Mentorship – our Mentorship Pod Program (MP²) pairs new and experienced students
Basically, if it builds skills and community, we do it!
Are there membership fees?
Yes — membership helps us fund t-shirts, events, and supplies.
$20 for one semester (includes a THSS t-shirt)
$30 for the full academic year (available each fall)
Dues are paid online after you fill out the membership form.
What are the credit requirements for teachHOUSTON classes?
Each teachHOUSTON course requires a total of four credits:
2 Professional Development (PD) credits
1 Community Service (CS) credit
1 additional credit that can be PD, CS, or Social
Example combinations include 2 PD + 1 CS + 1 Social, or 3 PD + 1 CS. Whichever combination works best for you!
How can I become an officer?
While any paid member of the teachHOUSTON Student Society is eligible to run for an officer position, most officers are selected from our current pool of Junior Officers. You can learn more about the Junior Officer Program here.
Do I have to be a member to participate in activities/attend events?
No! Events are open to all teachHOUSTON students, but members get additional benefits like t-shirts, running for office, and other exclusive opportunities.
