Individual Reward System: “Johnson Tickets”
I use a classroom currency system called Johnson Tickets to reinforce positive behavior and effort, where students earn tickets for meeting expectations, participating appropriately, and demonstrating responsibility. At the end of each quarter, they can spend their tickets, promoting delayed gratification, goal-setting, and accountability.
Positive Reinforcement: Desk Pets
Students also earn Desk Pets as a reward for consistent positive behavior. These serve as a visual and immediate reinforcement, helping build excitement and motivation within the classroom.
Engagement System: Mystery Machine
To increase engagement during instruction, I use a “Mystery Machine” system where students are selected using call sticks, and when a “mystery” stick is pulled, the next student must answer correctly to earn a reward. Rewards may include small prizes, Johnson Tickets, a stuffed animal at their desk, or access to a larger mystery reward, which encourages participation, accountability, and excitement during lessons
Whole-Class Incentive: Warm Fuzzy Jar
I use a Warm Fuzzy Jar as a whole-class reward system to build community and teamwork. Students earn contributions through positive behavior and collaboration, and once the jar is full, the class earns a shared reward like a pizza or ice cream party, encouraging collective responsibility and support for one another..
Impact on Classroom Culture
These layered reward systems:
Reinforce positive behavior, increase student engagement, promote both individual accountability and teamwork, and create a positive, motivating classroom environment
