Welcome to the Teaching AAC Project

This site is a collaborative resource developed by teachers and speech and language pathologists as part of a unique project in Quebec's English school boards. The "Teaching AAC Project" is supported by the ALDI Initiative, the Centre of Excellence for Autism Spectrum Disorder, the Centre of Excellence for Physically, Intellectually, and Multi-Challenged, and the Centre of Excellence for Speech and Language.From 2015-2017, the project connected speech and language pathologists and special education teachers from eight schools, and five school boards: Riverside School Board, Lester B. Pearson School Board, Sir Wilfrid Laurier School Board, Eastern Townships School Board and English Montreal School Board.

The focus of the project was to develop a professional learning community surrounding teaching communication and specifically augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) in the special education or inclusive classroom, with a focus on core vocabulary integration. In addition, for the 2016-2017 school year, we developed a special focus on written expression within the context of the Four Blocks Literacy framework (Dr. David Koppenhaver and Dr. Karen Erickson).
