On November 14th & 15th, 2016, and February 22nd 2017, the AAC professional learning community participated in three sessions on emergent writing for students with significant disabilities. Thank you to Sandra Gluth from the Edmonton Regional Consortium, who shared her expertise and experience from the Alberta school districts' community of practice, Literacy for All.
A summary of what we discussed:
- principles of instructional planning
- developmental writing scale
- shared writing, predictable chart writing
- independent writing, Author's Chair
- alternative pencils (+eye gaze and alphabet flip charts)
- assistive technology within the context of emergent writing (speech recognition, word prediction, text-to-speech)
- Augmentative and alternative communication and aided language input as a modeling strategy
