We can add someone's name or a word that replaces someone's name (friend, granddad, Mum etc) after a greeting. For example, we can say "tēnā koe e hoa" - hello friend.
The rule for using "e" after a greeting is
a) the word following must be two syllables or less, for example "hoa - friend"; "koro - granddad"
b) must be a Māori word or name, for example, "Pita - Peter"; "kui - grandma"
c) if the word following is a "te" or a "ngā", for example, "Kia ora e te whānau - hello family"; "Tēnā koutou e ngā rangatira mō āpōpō - greetings to you the leaders for tomorrow".
So, that means we do not use "e":
a) in front of English names or words
b) Māori names or words with 3 syllables or more, for example, "Piripi - Phillip"; "Jackson".
