MISS BLACK AND GOLD PAGEANT JUDGING AND SCORING RULES SCORING

The maximum score attainable by a contestant is 135 per judge. Competition and scoring by all pageants (i.e. College, District, Regional & National) shall be as indicated in the following categories:


I. JUDGES INTERVIEW (25 points max.)

In a 10-minute interview with each contestant, a panel of judges will look for perception, a sense of values, clarity of expression and concern and ability in human relations. Attire: Business

3. Sense of Values 1-5pts

4. Concern and Ability in Human Relations 1-5pts

5. Poise and Confidence 1-5pts


II. ACHIEVEMENTS & PROJECTION (10 points max.)

Before an audience, contestant will give her name, age, college/university, highest level of Alpha Phi Alpha she is representing (Chapter, District, Region), outline her achievements in school, social, civic, or community activities, plans for future and philosophy of life while projecting a good public speaking ability. The time limit for this segment is one and one-half minutes (90 seconds). Attire: Determined by coordinator depending on the theme of the pageant.

III. CREATIVE AND PERFORMING ARTS (30 points max.)

Scoring is based on originality, technical ability, appropriateness of selection and costume, and stage presence during vocal, instrumental, dramatic, acrobatic or gymnastic, or dance performance and cannot exceed three (3) minutes. Instrumentalists, other than a pianist must provide their own instruments and any labor charges connected with transporting such instruments. Contestant is responsible for providing talent props and any other equipment necessary for her performance. Attire: Attire should be what the contestant feels most comfortable in but must be in good taste and suitable for the talent being performed.

IV. LIFESTYLE AND FITNESS (10 points max.) “Form, figure, posture, and carriage are considered in an overall evaluation of physical well being. Contestants attire should be a one-piece swimsuit or fitness attire in good taste. If contestant wishes to wear swimsuit, a sarong may be worn the entire time.”

2. Outfit Complementing figure with/without heels 1-3pts

3. Poise 1-4pts

4. Loss of points for overexposure -1 to –3pts


V. POISE AND APPEARANCE (EVENING GOWN COMPETITION) (15 points max.)

Scoring in this category is based on the contestant’s grooming/appearance, grace, poise, posture, and carriage along with coordination and composure. Attire: Evening gown, no gloves of any kind, and no heels to exceed 3 inches.

2. Self-confidence 1-5pts

VI. ORAL EXPRESSION (15 points maximum)

This area of the competition usually involves having the contestant respond to a question on current events, issues of national concern, etc. Each contestant is asked the same question. Scoring in this category is based on the contestant's ability to articulate, her wit, intelligence, imagination, and her ability to think on her feet. Further, her ability to speak with eloquence and magnetism when answering the question is strongly considered. This is a thirty (30) second time limit event. Attire: Same as for Poise and Appearance

VII. SCHOLARSHIP (30 points max.)

The contestant's academic achievements will also be scored. The contestant should provide an official college/university transcript declaring her GPA for the previous semester, as well as cumulative GPA to-date.

1. Semester GPA (max. 13pts)

2.00-2.25 = 2 pts.

2.26-2.5 0 = 3 pts.

2.51-2.75 = 6 pts.

2.76-3.00 = 9 pts.

3.01-3.25 = 10 pts.

3.26-3.50 = 11 pts

3.51-3.75 = 12 pts

3.76-4.0 = 13 pts.


2. Overall GPA (max. 17pts)

2.00-2.50 = 8 pts.

2.51-2.99 = 10 pts.

3.00-3.50 = 14 pts.

3.51-4.00 = 17 pts.
