There are many stories about how we 'te ira tangata' (human beings) came to be. Some say it was Tāne, Tāne the progenitor of humankind who created us from the natural environment. Other versions say that mankind descend from Tūmatauenga.
As we learnt last term, Tāne is a celebrated Māori atua. It was Tāne who separated Rangi and Papa, it was Tāne who descended to twelfth heaven to retrieve the 3 kete. We now look at the story of how Tāne created the first woman from the soil at Kurawaka. Her name was Hineahuone (the female element who comes from the soil). Hineahuone and Tāne had a daughter named Hinetītama, who also became known as Hinenui-i-te-pō.
