In Te Orokohanga you would have learnt that Māori believe that everything comes from Ranginui and Papatuānuku. Pepeha is another way we stay connected to Papatuānuku. Pepeha is a way of introducing oneself, it identifies who we are, where we’re from and where we belong. It is important to note that our landmarks we identify with are the places where we would draw source from. Our maunga are where we would hunt to gather food, our awa would be our source of water and fish etc.

Do some research and find out your own pepeha. If you already know it then that is awesome. Remember don't worry if you don't have a pepeha, you are now connect to the school so you can use the school pepeha. Complete the sheet to the left.

To wrap up the first part of the pepeha unit I have sorted a kupu hou test. It's pretty straight forward, write the translation of each Māori and English word. Remember it is about what you know, not what the person beside you knows, or what the Māori dictionary knows. Kia kaha koutou!

Tūkapi or pronouns are very tricky to understand when first learning the basic of Te Reo Māori. Hopefully the document on the left will help you better understand how to use tūkapi.
