Lab report:
Lab report of a particular lab experiment needs to be submitted at the beginning of the
next class. There will be penalty of 5% for the late submission in the same day. The
penalty will be double for each additional days. Please try to follow the specific report
format. Remember, a colorful and beautiful handwriting will not increase your marks,
rather a neat and clean report will be preferable.
Each student is expected to prepare an submit their own report. Even if the experiments
are done in groups, each member of the groups should submit their report individually.
Some contents may be same for the members of the same group such as, Instrument used,
data table but few of them(experiment description, discussion etc.) should reflect
individual’s ability to understanding.
Computer generated typed work is preferred but not mandatory.
Lab notebook:
You must collect experiment data and write them down on lab notebook (a page or two
should be enough for one experiment)while doing your experiment. It’s your
responsibility to take signature on that at the end of the experiment. You must attach this
with your lab report otherwise no lab report will be examined.
Guidelines for notebook:
• State the objective of the experiment.
• Draw the ciruit digram and mention the values of resistances etc. which are used.
• Make a note of all the measuring instruments you have used.
• Mention the formulas used.
• Create a table and write down the readings, including the units.
• Try to show all your calculation
• Attach/draw graph if any.
• Be concise. Complete sentences are not necessary as long as the context is clear.
• Draw the figure using pencil so that you can make corrections to it in case you need to
do so by erasing and redrawing.
• Take a few short notes (2-3 lines), which explains some of the problems you encountered while doing the experiment. This will help you write better reports.
Report Format:
Reports will normally consist of the following items:
• Title page
A title page/cover sheet with the usual information : Experiment title; course title;
student's name; instructor's name, Experiment date and Submission date etc...
• Introduction
In brief you explain the objective or goals of the experiment done.
• Theory
Write the theory behind the experiment and also state any necessary formulas. You can
include the basic circuit diagram here.
• Experimental Procedure
Describe the experimental setup, instruments used, steps followed and measurement
done. You can include detail experimental schematic here. You may use any suitable
electronic schematic editor to prepare schematics, or they may be drawn by hand.
• Experimental Data
Put data table here.
• Results
Show any calculation done and draw data graph if there any.
• Discussion
It is a very important part of the report which testifies to the student’s understanding of
the experiments and its purpose. Explain the results achieved and the data graph drawn.
Try to explain the pattern of the graph and justify this. Compare the expected outcome
with the measured one.
• Conclusions
A brief conclusion summarizing the work done.
