Talking Circles are a traditional way of Native Americans to make common decisions. First Nations people observed that the circle is a dominant symbol in nature. It is the earth, the sky, the sun, the moon, the seasons, and the cycle of life. The circle symbolizes horizontal structure, equality, and infinity. The circle is ready to start when everyone can see everyone.
The talking stick, stone, or feather symbolizes the connectivity with the land and offers the tool to facilitate the circle.
The stick is always passing clockwise.
It is respectful before you speak to introduce yourself.
Only the person holding the stick talks. The rest are quietly and respectfully ACTIVELY LISTENING without Interruption.
Always speak to the spirit of the circle and not to individuals. Do not speak for others; speak for yourself (Speak from the I) and be conscious not to offend or disrespect anyone.
We create a safe space for everyone. We are learning how to respect the views of others and create a space to express our ideas without fear of ridicule.
Be respectful of time.
A person may pass the stick without speaking.
People that are experienced in talking circles should sit at the start of the circle to set the intention and tone of the circle. It's essential to stay on the topic.
Newcomers are kindly asked not to speak in the first round of the circle. Observe what is happening and pass the stick without talking in the first round. In the second round, you are welcome to speak.
It's not obligatory to stay in the circle till the end; you can come in or go out whenever you want. Be mindful and respectful and disturb as little as possible.
When you put your knowledge in a circle, it’s not yours anymore; it’s shared by everyone.
The circle is complete when everyone has had a chance to speak.
We trust the decision-making process, even though we might not be present in the decision-making. Because we believe that it was the most wise decision.
