The Trans American Trail, or TAT, is a pathway across the entire United States. It is comprised mostly of dirt or gravel roads. There are paved sections especially close to the coasts as a lot of people live near the coasts and the density leads to more paved roads. It is set up to travel from the east coast to the west coast. It is said you can make the trip in 2 or 3 weeks, but there are plenty of sites saying that more time is better. We made our trip in 26 days, just under 4 weeks.
Why would I want to do all that riding just to get to the west coast when I can take a plane or drive a car? You are missing the point. This is not like a regular vacation. Any other time you are anxious to get to the destination so you can have fun. Here, getting there is the fun. Sure, the west coast is you final destination on paper. In reality, your destination is the whole ride across the country. It is all the places you see, all the things you eat, all the people you meet. It is the experience that is great. If anything, the end of the trail is the saddest part of the trip.
