Fundamental Research Toward Utilizing Bamboo Laminated Timber as a Building Material
Bamboo
Background and Purpose
Bamboo has long been ubiquitous in daily life as a material for household goods and construction. However, its presence has been diminishing due to the recent proliferation of plastics, resulting in an increase in abandoned bamboo forests that have become a social issue. Amidst rising demand for timber, there is a growing call for alternative construction materials to replace wood. Against this backdrop, the aim is to clarify the structural properties of bamboo laminated timber and its environmental impact, with the goal of promoting its use as a structural material by processing bamboo into this form.
Results
This study conducted fundamental research to explore the use of bamboo as a building material by developing bamboo laminated timber. To this end, structural performance and environmental performance were verified through experiments and simulations. We confirmed that bamboo laminated timber possesses sufficient strength for structural applications and obtained individual ratings for buildings constructed with it. While manufacturing bamboo laminated timber does not yield net carbon sequestration, we confirmed that revising the manufacturing process holds the potential to achieve carbon sequestration exceeding that of wood laminated timber.
