Map of China and surrounding areas before, during and after the Taiping rebellion. Labelled with colors for how each part was affected.
This map gives us an overview of how each area in China and other areas nearby were affected differently. It shows how central/ eastern China was Pre-Qing Han territory; it then shows how the Taiping Rebellion occurred in East China (Zhejiang) and went only as far as Hunan from 1850-1864. From here we can see that South China, Nepal and Korea were Tributary states. We can then see that Manchuria was the Manchu homeland and then Inner Mongolia saw the Manchu expansion pre 1644. Finally, we can see that Northwest China had the Manchu expansion by 1800. It is important to see the areas of China that were affected by the Taiping Rebellion and how other areas were also affected before and after the Taiping Rebellion.
This source is extremely important for us as it gives us a visual representation of the areas of China and surrounding countries and how they were impacted by the Taiping Rebellion. Being able to see this gives us a good idea on how much of China was actually affected by the Taiping Rebellion. Only a small proportion of the country was affected by the fourteen years of the Taiping Rebellion. Although this is the case, we will still get to see that there were many consequences of the rebellion that impacted China during and after this time. I used this source because seeing it will give us a good idea on the area of China we will be speaking about in the upcoming pages, and we will be able to see the extent of the effects of the Taiping Rebellion.
