The Taiping rebellion is seen as one of the deadliest civil wars to take place in history. It took place in China and lasted fourteen years from 1850-1864. This rebellion occurred and damaged seventeen provinces and approximately twenty million lives were taken. Hong Xiuquan was the leader of the Taiping rebels. He got to this position because he had just failed multiple imperial civil service exams which led to him having a mental breakdown. He then started to have visions and these visions convinced him that he was the brother of Jesus. He started preaching his visons to anyone that would listen and soon enough he had a large following and the Taiping community was formed. Around the same time, the Chinese Government wanted to purge all Christians (Society of God Worshippers) to decrease religious decent across China. Hong and the Taiping rebels didn't agree with this and instead wanted peace throughout China and tried to achieve this using force. This disagreement led to the Taiping rebellion. Although the rebellion only lasted fourteen years, it still took several years after this to defeat the last Taiping resistance.
In this site I will be explaining what the Taiping rebellion was, as well as some of the battles that took place, why the rebellion failed and who was affected by the rebellion.
