We have learnt a lot about the Taiping rebellion from the sources in this site. We have learnt what initiated the Taiping rebellion and how one man's visions and beliefs led to him leading a rebellion and the deaths of around twenty million people. We were also able to see what parts of China were affected by the Taiping rebellion (mainly the East coming into the middle). We were also able to get a better understanding of what Hong and the Taiping rebels wanted form China which was more equality in terms of land. They wanted land to be distributed more fairly, instead of it being based on sex and other factors, it should be based on the number of people in your family. Women were also treated more "fairly" by the Taiping's. We were also able to see, from the poem, the kind of behavior that was expected by each person in the family, from the daughters-in-law to the wife and husband. The Taiping rebellion only seemed to involve China and we got a better understanding of why the Western powers didn't get involved. We were also able to look at some old newspapers and see how the rebellion was reported on during this time. Finally, we were able to see why the Taiping rebellion failed and what the effects were of the Taiping rebellion.
The Taiping rebellion is a major part of Chinese history, and it was one of the deadliest civil wars to date, but I had never heard of it before. Millions of people lost their loved ones and China was greatly affected by the rebellion. I think this is something that everyone should have a better understanding of. A rebellion was led by a man who believed he was the brother of Jesus because he had visions of this. Millions of people died because of these visions. From this site we are able to get a better understanding of why this happened, but it is also important to remember the lives of innocent people that were lost during this rebellion. Hong wanted peace throughout China but instead brought terror and horror to the people that lived there.
