Basic punches of Taekwondo (specially in yellow belt) are -
Ap Jireugi – Front punch, delivered straight from the shoulder to the target, usually midsection.
Bandae Jireugi – Reverse punch, thrown with the rear hand with hip rotation for more power.
Momtong Jireugi – Middle section punch aimed at the opponent’s torso, can be done with either hand.
Olgul Jireugi – High section punch targeting head or upper chest, beginners focus on control and light contact.
Tutorial: Momtong jireugi
Momtong jireugi is a simple, basic punch. Front punch to the midsection. Snap from the shoulder, rotate your hips, keep guard up, exhale sharply.
To perform Momtong Jireugi, start in a front stance with your feet firmly planted. Keep your punching hand tight, thumb outside, and elbow aligned with your body. Bring your fist straight from your shoulder toward the opponent’s midsection, using a slight rotation of your hips for added power. Keep your other hand up in guard position, exhale sharply as you punch, and maintain balance by stepping slightly forward with your front foot. Practice slowly at first to focus on accuracy, then increase speed and power as you get comfortable.
Olgul jireogi:
Olgul Jireugi – punch to the head. Use horse stance for stability, snap from shoulder, rotate hips, guard up, exhale sharply.
Olgul Jireugi is a high punch aimed at the head or upper chest. Beginners can practice it from horse stance (Juchum Seogi) to maintain stability and build leg strength. Focus on snapping the fist from the shoulder, rotating the hips for added power, keeping the non-punching hand in guard position, and exhaling sharply with each strike. Start slowly to perfect accuracy and control, then gradually increase speed and power.
Start in a front stance or horse stance, same way as momtong jireogi, throw the punch to someone's face level as a high punch.

Ap Jireugi is a straight punch aimed at the midsection or chest. Beginners usually practice it from horse stance (Juchum Seogi) to stay stable and build leg strength, though it can also be done from front stance (Ap Seogi) for proper reach and form. When punching, keep your fist tight with the thumb outside, rotate your hips slightly to add power, and snap the punch from the shoulder rather than just using your arm. Keep your non-punching hand up in guard position, exhale sharply with each strike, and maintain balance by stepping slightly forward with your front foot. Start slowly to focus on accuracy and technique, then gradually increase speed and power.
Bandae jireogi:
Bandae Jireugi – reverse punch to the midsection. Use horse stance for stability, snap from shoulder, rotate hips, guard up, exhale sharply.
Bandae Jireugi is a reverse punch aimed at the midsection. It’s usually practiced from horse stance (Juchum Seogi) for stability and leg strength, but can also be done from front stance (Ap Seogi). The punch comes from the rear hand, with a slight rotation of the hips to generate more power. Keep your fist tight, thumb outside, and snap it from the shoulder rather than just using the arm. Maintain your non-punching hand in guard position, exhale sharply with each strike, and stay balanced by stepping slightly forward with your front foot. Start slowly to perfect technique, then gradually increase speed and power.

Dwitch jireogi:
Dwitch Jireugi – back punch using rear fist. Twist upper body, strike behind you, keep guard up, exhale sharply.
Dwitch Jireugi is a back punch used to strike an opponent behind you. Start in a horse stance (Juchum Seogi) for stability. Look over your shoulder first to aim, then twist your upper body sharply and extend the rear fist straight backward toward the target. Keep your punching arm level with your shoulder, and your other hand in guard position. The power comes from your hip and shoulder rotation, not just the arm. Exhale sharply as you punch and return smoothly to your stance. Practice slowly to control direction and accuracy before adding speed.
“Yeop Jireugi – side punch at shoulder level. Twist waist, keep stance strong, guard up, exhale sharply.”
Yeop Jireugi is a side punch aimed at a target beside you. Start in horse stance (Juchum Seogi) to stay balanced and stable. Turn your head first to face the direction of the punch, then twist your waist slightly and extend your fist straight to the side at shoulder level. Keep your arm parallel to the floor, fist tight, and thumb outside. The power comes from the waist rotation and strong stance, not from swinging the arm. Keep your other hand in guard position and exhale sharply as you punch. Practice slowly to keep the line straight and the stance firm.
