Web and Social Media

My absolute favorite thing to do for Denebola: make videos. And that's what I did! I bring my camera and mic every day to school. You never know what could happen, who you could meet, or what you could film! I went to prom and countless football games and it was so much fun to experience as well as document. Not only am I glad to paint a positive picture of the school and these events, but it is nice to look back at as memories for my graduating class.

As for social media, I post the absence list every morning along with a song and a happy message. Yes, it requires quite the dedication, and I have even woken up in other timezones in order to post the list!

But that is one of my very minimal roles. The Instagram for Denebola is the most followed school-affiliated Instagram account and therefore is known as the Instagram account representing Newton South. Because of its reach, it's really important for me to post positive and entertaining content to keep our numbers and audience up and to create a good reputation for South, as many students from surrounding schools follow the account as well.

The Snapchat account for Denebola is used for sharing Denebola staff activities (to show that we are a fun club to join) and for funny things going on around the school, as one would post on their private story. The use of comedy on this app is key, as no one uses Snapchat for information or serious content. These comedic posts follow current trends and make relatable content for our student body. I often post things that are funny but also relate to current events, like the leaks in our school which relate to an upcoming local election.

The TikTok account for Denebola is what most TikTok accounts are: for fun! The Denebola staff often makes TikToks during meetings or outside hangouts. Some of our videos also promote coming to our meetings, which actually successfully get onto students For You pages. Although Denebola's TikToks are not the most journalistic content, it's important to keep up and utilize the apps that Gen Z is using, as that is a large part of our audience.

The Twitter account for Denebola is dead, simply put, no one uses Twitter anymore. Nevertheless, I often post game scores or funny jokes for the few followers it has.

Below, I have included some of the work that I am most proud of on Denebola's social media accounts! Please click on the captions to view the video.
