A Message To Parents, Guardians, and Students Regarding
ELA Summer Reading 2024:
Why Summer Reading?
Summer reading in the EGSD English Department has two primary goals: (1) fostering a love of reading and (2) supporting the thematic ideas students explore during the school year in their grades 6-12 English classes. In furtherance of these two goals, we require all students to select and read one or two books over the summer, depending on the course in which they are enrolled.
Why Choice?
We want students to enjoy what they read this summer, which means that, to the extent possible, we offer students choice in selecting their books.
Like last year, most students can choose from among numerous beloved classics or new award-winning books. Ms. Susan Straub, our wonderful library media specialist at the high school, updated our book lists with this year’s award winners, and they appeal to a broad spectrum of student interests.
Additional Option for Grades 6-10 and some Juniors and Seniors
In addition to providing curated lists, we offer another option that allows families a way to connect through the summer reading. A couple of years ago, one of our department members spent the summer reading the favorite book of everyone in the family--mom, dad, grandparent, sibling, and one close family friend. Incredible conversations and bonding resulted from that reading.
We’d like our own students to consider this option if they’re enrolled in a class that asks them to select from a book list. If you wish to take advantage of this option, you may choose a favorite book of a family member, as long as your parent or guardian approves the selection. (Some of our 11/12 grade AP and Honors classes don’t have the luxury of offering that as part of summer reading, given the course pacing demands).
How To Find Your Reading Assignment:
Use the chart on the EGSD Library website (linked below) to find your English course(s) for next year and its required summer reading assignments.
Please note that while it is not possible for your child’s teacher to have previewed each of the books on the lists we’ve provided, the selections have been vetted by well-respected panels of library media specialists and preteen/adolescent educators. Here’s the link to the web page for the EGSD 6-12 ELA Summer Reading.
