Canada is a constitutional monarchy, which means the Monarch of Britain is the head of state, but our Prime Minister is the head of government.
There are three branches of Canadian Government, The Legislative Branch, The Executive Branch, and the Judicial Branch.
The Legislative Branch makes, edits, changes, and removes the laws, or legislation. The Legislative Branch is split into two houses which are the Senate, and the House of Commons.
The House of Commons is elected by voters
The Senate is appointed by the Prime Minister, and there are 100 Senators in the Senate. Senators are usually people who've contributed a lot to Canada, eg. former mayors, presidents of large companies, judges, professors, etc. Senators get to stay in their jobs until their retirement at the age of 75.
There are three tiers of Canadian government, responsible for different areas of Canada.
At the top is the Federal Government, which is responsible for the whole country
In the middle is the Provincial/Territorial Government which is responsible for matters in their province
At the lowest tier is the Municipal Government, responsible for matters within the city/town/township/other municipality
