Your path towards learning the course content of Nutrition 10 will go a little more smoothly if we all understand the following policies. If you have any questions about any of this, please reach out to me.
DeAnza College values academic integrity as an essential component of academic excellence. Students are expected to be truthful and honest in their academic work.
I expect all of my students to be truthful and honest in their work.
Any student found taking part in any form of academic dishonesty will receive no points or grade for the academic task completed without integrity.
Any form of plagiarism; giving your academic work to another student to plagiarize
Having someone other than yourself take a Test
Using non-permitted resources (like AI) while taking a Test
Giving or receiving test questions from a current or former student of Nutrition 10
Communicating with anyone other than your instructor while taking a Test: Talking, text message, e-mail, videoconferencing, etc.
Turning in another person's Diet Assignment (or any part of it), representing it as your own
Copying part(s) of the Diet Assignment from another person’s work
Lying to an instructor or college official to improve your grade
NOTE: The Office of the Dean of Student Affairs & Activities maintains a record of students who have engaged in academic dishonesty.
Students who cheat in a class and are not caught did not earn the grade listed on their record. That is not their grade to own. Even if no one else knows it, THEY will know it.
A student who cheats on his/her way towards graduation will not make it in the working world
Cheating WILL catch up to you even if you manage to avoid being caught at the time
Honor academic integrity now and forever
Learning how to thoughtfully use AI-based tools in this course(ChatGPT, CoPilot, Claude, etc) can help you develop your academic skills. But AI results can be biased and inaccurate.
Acceptable ways to use AI in Nutrition 10:
To check your grammar for written work; to polish your writing
To create flash cards or concept maps to help you study for a test
Finding definitions of terms
Finding help to understand a concept
NOT allowable ways to use AI in Nutrition 10:
To create any any part of the Diet Assignment (other than checking grammar in your writing)
To assist you during test
To create the content of your discussion POST and/or REPLIES (but it's fine for polishing your writing)
To write the content of your Extra Credit Reflection
Unhelpful ways to use AI in Nutrition 10 (but not forbidden!):
To find the answers to the questions on the Worksheets. AI can mislead you or focus on information that is not part of the Nutrition 10 course content. (Use the course materials to fill out the worksheets)
To fill out the Study Guide for the tests. Again, what you get from AI can mislead you. You NEED to use the course materials and not the general internet. There IS value in seeking and finding the answers to the questions.
To summarize the Virtual Lectures. You will miss details and nuances if you read a simple summary.
You’ll find more examples of helpful/not helpful ways and guidelines for using AI in this course on Canvas.
If you choose to drop the course, you can do this through MyPortal.
There are various dates for dropping - dropping with a full refund, without the course being on your record, with a W for Withdrawal. Check the De Anza calendar for those dates for this quarter.
If you realize you are not passing the class and it is after the deadline to drop with a W, please do not ask me to drop you. I have no ability to drop you after that date. Monitor your course standing throughout the quarter so there are no surprises in the last 2 weeks.
Often referred to as "netiquette," here is a gentle reminder of the interaction practices and rules we'll follow in all our interactions in this course.
Please read this short article and watch the very brief embedded video on this topic.
If you ever feel that someone is not following these rules, please get in touch with me to share your concerns.
