This course runs on participation, problem-solving, and showing up to think through ideas together. We will use iClicker polls during every lecture to support engagement and give you frequent practice applying concepts.
Each clicker question in lecture is worth 1 point.
Students earn full participation credit for every response submitted.
Students also earn 10% extra credit for each correct answer (0.1 points per correct response).
An additional 1 point in participation is earned if all clicker questions in a single lecture are answered.
The 3 lowest clicker scores will get dropped from your overall grade.
Clicker scores are not adjusted for missed or incomplete responses, including missed questions due to device issues, wifi interruptions, slow devices, opening the app late, or arriving late/leaving early.
Score Examples (based on 7 clicker questions in one lecture):
Answered all 7 questions and got all correct: 8 participation points + 0.7 extra credit = 8.7 out of 8
Answered 6 out of 7 questions and got 5 correct: 6 participation points + 0.5 extra credit = 6.5 out of 8
It is the student's responsibility to make sure their device is set up, registered, and working before lecture begins.
If you forget your clicker device or remote, you cannot earn clicker credit for that day.
If using a personal device (phone, tablet, or laptop), you must:
have location services enabled, and
respond during lecture with location access turned on.
If using a physical remote, you must register the remote ID to your clicker cloud account in order to receive credit.
A limited number of physical remotes are available to check out for the quarter.
Account Access and Registration Notes
Clicker course access is included at no cost with your Achieve access code (purchased through the UO Bookstore online).
If you already have an clicker cloud account, you will be auto-registered and synced to the course.
If you do not have a clicker cloud account, you will receive an email invitation to create one.
Your clicker cloud account must be registered using your student email address.
This class follows UO's reason-neutral attendance policy (for a detailed interpretation of the policy, see UO's Course Attendance and Engagement Policy Interpretation). This means there is no distinction between excused and unexcused absences. Because of this, please do not:
email asking to makeup attendance/clicker polls or to request an extension on an assignment.
send documentation such as doctor's notes, medical records, or other personal details.
share sensitive personal information by email.
Within the course structure, there is some flexibility provided by the drop policy which is intentionally designed to cover approximately one week of missed lecture and assignments. The attendance and drop policy exists to protect student privacy, maintain fairness across the entire course, and ensure everyone is evaluated by the same standards.
Extenuating Circumstances
If you experience an extenuating circumstance that results in more than one week of consecutive missed classes, you may reach out to discuss possible options. Extenuating circumstances are defined as:
a single event, and
causing more than one continuous week of absence, and
not a single emergency event, temporary illness, or other short-term last-minute circumstance.
