Think Like a Scientist (TLAS) is a volunteer program founded and led by members of the Northeastern Chapter of Sigma Xi, the Scientific Research Honor Society. TLAS holds weekly mentoring sessions and leads science experiments with K-5 kids in the Northeastern University area. Although Sigma Xi organizes TLAS, ALL Northeastern students are welcome to volunteer and participate in our program!
Our goal is to show students that they can be successful in a STEM career no matter what their background. We want to show K-5 kids that science involves creativity, curiosity, and critical thinking. We hope to provide a scientific presence and spark an early interest in STEM careers by fostering an accepting, encouraging, and supportive learning environment. We encourage asking questions, being curious, and posing solutions.
As the fields of science and technology advance, career opportunities in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) continue to expand, and having an influx of creative scientists is more important than ever. There is a profoundly low retention rate of students that remain in STEM following post-secondary education. A common lack in STEM education is relatability and diversity; if students don’t see people relatable to themselves in STEM fields, they may be less inclined to pursue those fields. Since we are students ourselves, we are more relatable than classic teachers. Additionally, our methodology of building a story-centered curriculum will help to rectify these concerns. The goal of this story-centered, activity-based curriculum is to encourage students to think like a real-world scientist and make it easier to translate their roles from this program to their future roles in their classrooms or careers. If you are interested in becoming a Think Like A Scientist mentor, please indicate your interest on our interest form!
Weekly Outreach
We work with two different community partners to mentor young students in the Roxbury area of Boston.
Mentorship
We provide guidance and mentorship on what it means to be a scientist, how to attain a scientific education, and how to think like a scientist.
Hands On Learning
We use hands-on activities to make science fun, and inspire confidence with the scientific method.
Story-Centered Curriculum
We employ a story-centered curriculum to tell a narrative about scientific professionals from all backgrounds and to make each activity as engaging as possible for the students
