About GradSWE

Who we are

GradSWE is the graduate student community of the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) at UIC, dedicated to providing a supportive and inclusive community for graduate students in engineering and related fields.

Our Mission

Our mission is to advocate for graduate women in engineering and undergraduate women interested in pursuing graduate studies. Through our events and initiatives, we aim to build a strong community that uplifts and empowers graduate students throughout their academic and professional journeys and equip members with the resources they need for successful careers after completing their degrees.

Why should you join GradSWE?

Joining GradSWE has numerous benefits. By joining GradSWE, you become part of a vibrant community of peers with access to professors through coffee chats, gaining insights into research, academia, and career opportunities. We also provide access to resources for career development, such as workshops and networking opportunities with academic and industry professionals, as well as SWE’s online community and conferences. Social and de-stress events held throughout the semester help members connect with other graduate students, make new friends, and expand their research horizons. As a GradSWE member, you also have access to national SWE membership, which expands your network and professional growth opportunities even further.

Undergraduate students also benefit from GradSWE, gaining valuable insights into navigating graduate school, including guidance on scholarships, financial aid, and the various pathways available after completing a degree. Our "Demystifying Grad School" event addresses these topics, equipping undergraduates with the knowledge and resources to make informed decisions about their future academic and professional journeys.

Professional Development

Each semester, we collaborate with industry partners to help our members connect with professionals, strengthen their portfolios, and gain insights into industry expectations. Events include company info sessions, resume and LinkedIn workshops, and company site tours.

Grad School 101

Applying to grad school or just getting started? Don’t worry—GradSWE has you covered! We host sessions on how to navigate the application process, make your application stand out, and explore funding options (because let’s be real—money doesn’t grow on trees).

Technical Workshops

Our technical workshops give you a chance to build new skills beyond the classroom—from soldering to 3D modeling. Whether you’re a total beginner or brushing up on old skills, there’s something for you.

Social Events

We know grad school can be isolating—so we make time for fun, too! From coffee chats and movie nights to game nights and themed socials, our events are all about meeting new people and building community.
