Mandra sthayi varase also known as Thaggusthaayi varase are a set of basic Carnatic music exercises focused on developing proficiency in the lower octave (mandra sthayi). They involve singing note sequences, often in descending order, that extend below the lower "Sa" to build strength, clarity, and vocal control in the lower registers of the voice. These exercises are crucial for students to gradually gain the ability to sing the lower notes required for more complex compositions.
