Every year I make a new artwork responding to the 1993 film Groundhog Day. Previous years have seen me produce a video glitch remix, a reverse palendromic re-edit, and even a sequel. This year however, I wanted to explore the format of the DVD.

Doh! God U Angry presents the original film as a randomly navigating dvd. After each day in the film, Phil Connors will wake up not on the next sequential day in the film. but on a randomly chosen day, meaning that he could potentially stay in Punxatawny forever.

The implications of this structure for character and narrative progression are boith significant and absurd - nothing that Phil does on any day will improve or diminish his chances of waking up 'tomorrow'. Equally, as he osciullates between redemptive behaviour (good deeds, self improvement) and selfish or destructive acts (gluttony, avarice), these can be read in response to previous setbacks. He fails, he fails again, he falls of the wagon, and yet somehow perseveres. After all, what other choice does he have?

The title is an anagram of Groundhog Day - and one of many possible new titles that can be accessed via a random menu (including Doug Hog Randy and Doughy Dragon). 

The dvd medium has been sadly dismissed by tech companies such as Apple, in order to benefit streaming services. But the format itself contains so much scope for how we navigate a film, or access supporting material. It is a fantastic hybrid of the physical and the digital.

This project was created on an old copy of DVD Studio Pro 4 installed on a 2010 mac mini running OSX Lion.

Chaque année, je crée une nouvelle œuvre d'art en réponse au film Groundhog Day de 1993 (aka - le jour de la marmotte) . Les années précédentes, j'ai produit un remix de vidéo glitch, une réédition palendromique inversée et même une suite. Cette année, cependant, j'ai voulu explorer le format du DVD.

Doh ! God U Angry présente le film original sous la forme d'un DVD à navigation aléatoire. Après chaque journée du film, Phil Connors se réveille non pas le jour suivant, mais un jour choisi au hasard, ce qui signifie qu'il pourrait potentiellement rester à Punxatawny pour toujours.

Les implications de cette structure pour la progression du personnage et du récit sont à la fois significatives et absurdes - rien de ce que Phil fait chaque jour n'améliorera ou ne diminuera ses chances de se réveiller "demain". De même, lorsqu'il oscille entre un comportement rédempteur (bonnes actions, amélioration de soi) et des actes égoïstes ou destructeurs (gloutonnerie, avarice), ceux-ci peuvent être interprétés comme une réponse à des échecs antérieurs. Il échoue, il échoue encore, il tombe du wagon, et pourtant il persévère d'une manière ou d'une autre. Après tout, quel autre choix a-t-il ?

Le support DVD a été tristement écarté par des entreprises technologiques telles qu'Apple, au profit des services de streaming. Pourtant, le format lui-même offre de nombreuses possibilités pour naviguer dans un film ou accéder à des documents complémentaires. C'est un hybride fantastique entre le physique et le numérique.
