About SVDP at

St James of the Valley Catholic Church

The Society of St Vincent DePaul at St James of the Valley Catholic Church is an outreach ministry of the church; volunteers living out our Christian calling to love and serve our neighbors in need.  We are a chapter of the International Confederation of the Society of St Vincent DePaul, a network of friends who seek personal holiness through service to those in need and in defence of social justice.

How It Works

If you are in need and you live in our service area (see map below), call us at 513-948-1218 (Option 3). Leave a message with your name, address, phone number, and a brief description of your need.

Volunteers from the parish listen to the messages and pair each neighbor in need with a caring volunteer (called a Vincentian).  Your Vincentian neighbor will setup a time with you to listen to your needs, help you understand your options, help financially (as funds are available) or with food, clothing, household goods, or furniture as needed, and pray with you.

Limitations

We are limited by the number of volunteers are available and the amount of donations we have at any one time.

Limitations with Returning Your Call

Please know that it may take a long time to return your call as the needs are often greater than we can handle quickly (up to 2 weeks!).  Sometimes, when we are especially overwhelmed with requests for help, we temporarily pause taking any calls (there will be a notice on our voicemail).

Limitations with Financial Assistance

Depending on circumstances, we may not be able to help directly with cash assistance; however, we will help you understand your options, think creatively on how to meet your needs, connect you with other groups who can help, and offer referrals to other assistance resources as available.

Rent & Utilities

To use our funds wisely, we usually require an eviction notice or a utility disconnect notice in order to provide financial assistance for rent or utilities.  When funds are available, we can usually offer cash assistance paid directly to your landlord or utility company on your behalf, but only if you can come up with the rest of the amount due first.

Beds

We can help you get a free twin, full, or queen mattress with frame if needed. But, we only are able to request a small number of beds once at the beginning of each month from SVDP Neyer Outreach. Because of this, it could take a couple of months for you to be able to receive a free bed from us.  If approved for a bed, a voucher will be mailed to your home, and then you will need to pick up the mattress and frame yourself from our downtown location.  The mattresses are packaged

Clothing, Household Goods, Furniture

If you need clothing, household goods, or furniture, we can help. As needed, we can offer personal, one-time use vouchers that can only be used at our SVDP thrift stores for these goods. To make your clothing voucher go even farther, consider shopping at the SVDP Outlet Store in Carthage (Este Ave location). Ask your Vincentian neighbor when you meet to discuss your needs.
