In 2017, Gary Singh and Dr. Farhana Loonat started the South Asian Club with a view to supporting South Asian students and giving them a sense of belonging at the college. This is because research shows that students who experience a sense of belonging at their campuses are retained longer and graduate at higher rates.
To create this sense of belonging, they held the first annual dance event in 2018 at the Tarro Theater, which holds a capacity of 197 people. Since then, with the support of many people, students under the leadership of event lead organizers Priya Kumar and Dr. Loonat have grown the event, with an attendee list of 500 at the Ferndale Events Center in 2022.
Aside from the annual event to raise funds for the Guru Nanak Scholarship, the club has organized a Vaisakhi event, a Diwali event, shared Bhagavad Gita recordings and translations on YouTube, offered free weekly meditation sessions to support mental health during the pandemic, and held many other special events.
