There always seems to be a bully and a kid who gets picked on. But it doesn’t always have to stay that way. Wardy Spinks has been a loser for as long as he can remember. Now, after messing up at military school, he returns home to finish his freshman year at Evanstown High. And who does he immediately bump into but Jimmo Rogers, the terror of the seventh grade and Wardy’s personal nemesis. High school looks like it’s going to be the same as junior high as Wardy once again becomes the butt of Jimmo’s malicious pranks. But as the year progresses, Wardy’s life begins to change. First, the charismatic science teacher from Germany, Heinrich Guterman, takes an interest in him. Then shy, quiet Meg from biology class seems to be making friendly overtures. And, of course, Grandma Lou is always there when he needs her. Maybe best of all, there’s Big Vi…and physics.
But most important, Wardy discovers that his own attitude makes a difference in how others treat him. If Wardy Spinks doesn’t feel like a loser, maybe Wardy Spinks won’t be one.
