Survivors + Allies
Our Story
Survivors + Allies (S+A) is a student-led organization that advocates for and with survivors of sexual violence at the UC's and across California.
We elevate student concerns to improve or expand institutional resources and services for survivors, and advocate for trauma-informed survivor-centered campus policies and funding.
To accomplish these goals S+A pursues a three-pronged strategy centered around research with survivors: communications about resources for survivors and to educate our broader community, activism and mobilization to ensure that survivors rights are always prioritized, and legal/policy work to change or update campus policies.
S+A has received funding from the UCLA Center for the Study of Women|Barbra Streisand Center, the Frank D. Gilliam Jr. Social Justice Award, and the Bruin Advocacy Award.
Team Goals
Our legal and policy work is rooted in community-driven trauma-informed praxis. We use our existing research to identify gaps and opportunities in state and local policy; draft legislative priorities and policy language to promote survivor-centered care; work with the Mobilization Team to expand our network of collaborators; and partner with the Research Communications Team to create policy and educational briefs.
Research Communication helps ensure that our work is both accessible and useful for others. Our team helps translate research and policy work for everyday use by survivors and students, and for policymakers who may be interested in pursuing legislation. Our team creates policy briefs in collaboration with the Legal/Policy Development team and creates educational briefs with or for other survivor advocacy and community-based organizations in efforts to help spread awareness and support our collaborators’ work.
Mobilization is an essential part of our work. S+A prioritizes community work, and is always looking for opportunities to build relationships. We find it critical to identify synergies that will help create lasting opportunities to ensure survivors voices remain heard. We have worked closely with a range of non-profits, grassroots community-based organizations, and student-led organizations.
