Started in Fall 2023, UNC-Chapel Hill student Jake Schattin (2023-PRESENT) had an idea to start a college Survivor club. With his friend and Vice President Alexis Powell (2023-PRESENT), Schattin outlined his plans for the initial application, a plan for casting, and every challenge. He launched his first round of casting with posters around campus and posts on YikYak. For Season 1, Survivor Carolina received around 70 applications within two weeks. He then narrowed it down to 16 compelling players and started the season.
The first season was filmed during the Spring 2024 semester, where contestants participated in competitions, strategizing, idol-hunting, and of course Tribal Council. The season concluded and announced its first winner of Survivor Carolina Season 1.
In the Fall 2024 semester, Schattin and his team started the process of recruiting more potential players and production members to join this developing organization through designing posters and meeting students at events. While doing so, Survivor Carolina was amping up for its next season!
On January 8, 2025, the first episode of Season 1 aired on our YouTube channel and has surpassed 2k views as of March 2025.
On January 28, 2025, UNC Student Affairs recognized us as an official organization within UNC. This opened the door of opportunity for us apply for funding, improve our outreach, and engage with other Survivor Tar Heel fans. Simultaneously, we upheld a consistent uploading schedule to our YouTube Channel.
Currently, Survivor Carolina is finishing production for Season 2, that will premire in Fall 2025. Unlike Season 1, we received a massive upgrade in our filming equipment such as tripods, lights, microphones, and more. This will improve the quality of our episodes and video quality.
Season 3 is currently being cast and will be filmed in tandem with Season 2 editing. This rolling schedule illustrates the dedication of our students and the span of this club.
As Survivor Carolina continues to grow, we hope to encourage UNC-Chapel Hill students to join us whether as a contestant, production member, or super fan who simply want to meet other super fans! Regardless of your role at Survivor Carolina, there will always be a home for you in this club.
Survivor Carolina aims to foster a community for Tar Heel students who love the CBS reality TV show Survivor, and host a space where these students can be together and connect.
Our purpose as an organization is to have a community where fans of Survivor can make new connections, explore their interests, get creative, build professional skills, and even have the chance to play on our own version of the show!
At Survivor Carolina, we pledge to make sure we offer an inclusive environment with people from all backgrounds to feel welcome and safe. Regardless of your race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, or other aspects of your identity, we at Survivor Carolina will ensure everyone feels at home.
