WALTERS REP APPLICATION OPEN!
We aim to make real change on a district-wide level.
Below are some initatives current SURF members are working to implement right now.
For the AC Transit visibility and transparency initiative, we will be reaching out to schools to conduct quarterly surveys, and convey information back to AC Transit. The goal of this initiative is to serve as a liaison between FUSD students and AC Transit.
Elementary schools & Robertson High School do not have a SURF representative, making it harder for them to reach out to admin & figure out who to go to to voice their needs. With Quarterly SURF meetings, those who need to can join and speak to actual SURF reps regarding their concerns. The FUSD community (including families, faculty, students) are welcome to join.
Financial literacy is a crucial life skill, but it’s not widely or uniformly taught in middle school. At this age, students are expected to make daily transactions at school or after school before they head home. We strongly believe that it is SURF and FUSD's responsibility to teach these kids, our students, about money and the decisions they are making and and are going to have to do more of in the future. This needs to be a big part of the curriculum being taught–so that our students can succeed beyond the years they spend at FUSD
The Academic Course Availability Survey Initiative (ACAS) aims to identify gaps in subject access across FUSD schools, especially in core subjects. By collecting student feedback through surveys, SURFBoardE and FUSD seek greater transparency and a clearer understanding of course availability. This insight will help ensure all students have equal access to essential academic subjects, even amid district-wide changes.
The SURF Boxes initiative aims to make student feedback more accessible and inclusive by installing physical, clearly labeled suggestion boxes on school campuses, starting with Washington High School. Paired with informational posters, these boxes will allow students to submit anonymous concerns, ideas, and experiences without needing to find the form online. Submissions will be regularly collected and reviewed by SURFBoardE members and included in school site reports, ensuring that all student voices can create improvements across the district.
Since 2014, the Fremont Unified School District (FUSD) has no longer accepted the Athletic Physical Education (PE) course due to the state education standard. Last year, this policy was considered to be brought up again, but with more contexts that needed to be clarified, including how to monitor the required amount of time for credit, the restriction for having a PE exemption and ways to limit PE teachers - budget issues.
Many FUSD students with food allergies and dietary restrictions struggle to find clearly labeled, safe options in school cafeterias. Our initiative proposes QR codes linking to full ingredient lists, printed menus with allergen info, a daily allergen-free meal, and designated allergy info stations. We also plan to gather student feedback to build a more inclusive and transparent cafeteria system that better supports all dietary needs.
The SURF Open Policy Form is an amazing way to be a voice in shaping our next projects! Student feedback is what we value most, and we want to bring this to you to bring innovative ideas and feedback to improve our program! From identifying new opportunities to improving existing policies, we are excited to hear from you!
