workshop n°2: What's Missing? > Mentor: Kai Löffelbein
This workshop explores how images shape our understanding of the city of Surabaya — not only through what they show, but through what they leave out.
Widely circulating images from media, institutional communication, and social platforms tend to present a selective view: clean infrastructures, consumption spaces, and controlled urban environments. While not false, these representations remain incomplete.
The workshop shifts the focus from misinformation as “false information”
toward
the question of absence: What is not visible? Which lives, spaces, and practices remain under-represented or excluded from dominant visual narratives?
Participants will work on themes such as informal economies, urban labor, youth in transition, everyday mobilities, and differentiated access to leisure and housing. Through a combination of visual research, fieldwork, and collaborative documentary practices, they will develop their own photographic approaches grounded in direct engagement with the city. The workshop emphasizes working with people rather than simply depicting them. Ethical questions — access, consent, representation — are treated as central to the photographic process.
Participants are encouraged to reflect on their own position, gaze, and assumptions when working in unfamiliar contexts.
The goal is to create a set of visual narratives that move beyond dominant representations and engage with the complexity of everyday life in Surabaya — grounded, collaborative, and critically aware.
