The difference between past and now
Long ago, university teachers were not required to balance teaching, research, and participation in Taiwan. The teacher must teach the students. Teachers could focus on one or two of the three tasks in the past.
Today, university teachers are always asked to teach, do research, and participate in practice.
All for education
Someday I found the reason why university teachers should balance the three tasks, including teaching, research, and participation in practice.
‘Teaching is for education, research is for education, and practice is for education.’ If you are going to cultivate the student to become a social worker, you should teach him the professional knowledge and skills of social workers in classes. Your research can contribute to knowledge and skills. Additionally, practice participation helps your teaching materials to be required by social workers. In short, all of them are for education.
Which expertise should you claim and extend?
I think you should claim your academic expertise based on your practice and teaching experience rather than your interest.
Furthermore, as a university teacher, you have to expand your expertise in teaching, research, and participation in practice.
For me, I was a medical social worker at a medical center hospital, a part-time supervisor for several welfare organizations that provide services for patients and their families, and a supervisor of a welfare organization that provides services for the elderly. I have been working with medical social work organizations, patient organizations, long-term care organizations, related nonprofit organizations and governments, including teaching, research, and practice tasks.
My expertise, except medical social work, patient organization, and long-term care, I have also focused on social work management (including the transdisciplinary team, network collaboration, and managerialism), social work profession (including team teaching, education and development), and self-management. The reason why I have been paying attention to the social work management (including transdisciplinary team, network collaboration, and managerialism), social work profession (including team teaching, education, and development), and self-management is based on my preference that I believe social work management can improve service quality, my mission that I decide to promote the status and technology of the social work profession, and my belief that I think excellent self-management is useful to achieve the goal of organization management, welfare service delivery, and professional development of social work.
What expertise and related contributions have I been dedicating and involving?
There are six expertise that I claim. Three of them are professional fields, including medical social work, patient organization, and long-term care; three of them are approaches, such as social work management (including transdisciplinary team, network collaboration, and managerialism), social work profession (including team teaching, education, and development), and self-management.
My expertise and related contributions have been dedicated and involved as follows.
