IQ tests and their proxies, which are designed to measure a factor known as general intelligence, are used by many businesses and colleges to help select the "best" candidates, and also play a role in schools and universities, in the form of SAT tests in the US and CATs in the UK. "IQ tests determine, to an important degree, the academic and professional careers of millions of people in the US," Stanovich says in his book, What Intelligence Tests Miss (Yale University Press, 2008). He challenges the "lavish attention" society bestows on such tests, which he claims measure only a limited part of cognitive functioning. "IQ tests are overvalued, and I think most psychologists would agree with that," says Jonathan Evans, a cognitive psychologist at the University of Plymouth, UK.

Sometimes I see the occasional post on chance me saying how they want to get into random T20 school but they got an 1110 for example on the SAT. Not to be pessimistic but I'm just thinking like why?? What do you guys think? Does it accurately measure one's academic intelligence?

Another thing that I realize as I get older is that intelligence comes in many forms. The traditional definition of intelligence (IQ) does not necessarily capture the full spectrum of intelligence needed to succeed in the real world. Some people are super creative, but cannot do numbers. Some people can do numbers, but have zero creativity. I would argue that creativity is a super intelligence because very few people are creative at a truly differentiating level. Other people are excellent with people and social situations. Yet, others have strong common sense with the ability to navigate through new environments and innately make excellent risk-adjusted decisions. Another intelligence is the ability to adapt to change. Some people have zero ability to deal with change while others effortlessly adapt to change. Other people can read political situations, but have poor self-awareness for how they are perceived. Others yet have outstanding self-awareness, but have no ability to read people and political situations. Some people are natural born leaders, and other people could not lead a 1 person team to save his/her life. (Leadership intelligence is probably one of the most important attributes needed to succeed in the real world). As you can see, there are many types of intelligence, and I have not even outlined an exhaustive list.

How else to explain why intellectually superior students so frequently develop apprehension about exhibiting their intelligence in the classroom? They may avoid volunteering the right answer, hoping that someone else will raise their hand. For if they routinely offer an answer no one else can come up with, they're likely to have the uncomfortable experience of being glared at. Or even being made fun of or bullied on the playground. Plus, being identified as "teacher's pet" isn't adulatory; it's censoring.

Other factors are evaluated in our review, but these do not supersede the assessment of academic factors. These factors include characteristics that positively correlate to student success in college.

Many rapid advances are happening right now in the area of these algorithms that do their application-focused tasks very, very well. These algorithms would not be mistaken for humans (outside their excellent performance on the application they were designed for). This may sound less exciting than OMG super-intelligent human-like machines, but these algorithms are having a much bigger impact on the world today: they are more accurate than human radiologists at diagnosing cancer, more accurate atunderstanding Mandarin and English speech than humans, at work in self-driving cars, improving treatment for pediatric ICU patients, working to end illegal logging in endangered rainforests, granting the visually impaired more independence, reducing farmer suicides in India, and more (note: although they are in the same family, a specific algorithm was trained and tuned for each of these applications).
